What are some quick facts about alcohol and driving drunk?

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs isn't a wise decision, but there are times when you may not be entirely at fault. Maybe you felt fine but were slightly over the limit or you took medications that left you drowsier than you expected. These are common issues that people face, and one small error shouldn't result in you losing your license or paying unfair penalties.

DUIs can change your life and make it hard to find work or to stay active in your local community. It's good to understand how alcohol will affect you, so you can avoid these kinds of charges. Here are a few interesting facts to consider.

In the United States, there are No Tolerance policies for those under 21. If you're under 21 and have any amount of alcohol in your blood stream, you could be charged with a DUI. What's important to know is that many things can result in an alcohol reading on a breath test. For instance, you may want to speak with your attorney about any medications you were on before you drove, because some cough medicines have alcohol in them. Some mouthwashes do as well.

A common misconception about alcohol is that when you're drunk, you can sober up quickly with a coffee or other quick fix. The fact is that once you're drunk, only time is going to help you. Drinking water may help the alcohol flush out of your system, but time is still the only surefire way to know you're no longer under the influence of alcohol.
