Common types of family abuse

Domestic violence is a serious problem in Colorado and the rest of the country. What many people don't realize is that domestic violence doesn't just happen between two people who are dating and living together. It also happens in family settings, where there are married people, children and other family members living under one roof. Today, let's take a look at the common types of family abuse.

As you might have already known, physical abuse is the most common type of family abuse. Physical abuse includes slapping, hitting, punching, kicking, stabbing, shooting or causing any type of injury to a loved one with your hands or feet or a weapon. The injuries do not have to be serious in order for domestic violence charges to be filed.

Sexual abuse is another form of family abuse. It includes rape, sexual assault, unwelcome touching, harassment and any other sexually demeaning behavior. Sexual abuse can also include being coerced into having an abortion or being coerced into having intercourse without the use of contraception.

Emotional abuse occurs in many homes. It involves the constant humiliation of another person due to insult, criticism or other demeaning comments. It can be difficult to claim domestic violence when emotional abuse is present unless the relationship can be deemed as coercive.

There can also be financial abuse in a family. This happens when one spouse prevents the other from obtaining an education or from getting a job outside the home. It also occurs when one person controls all the money and doesn't allow the other spouse to have access without asking.

As you can see, there are a lot of situations in which family abuse can be present in your Summit County home. If you are ever accused of any of these types of abuse, or domestic violence, you need to protect yourself and your rights immediately.
